The glitch triggered confusion and concern across the platform on Wednesday, drawing fresh scrutiny to the reliability and safety of large language models deployed in public spaces.

Dozens of posts from Grok referenced racially charged topics, including the controversial “Kill the Boer” chant and farm attacks in South Africa, despite users asking about everything from sports salaries to scenic images. In one example, a user’s innocent question about a professional baseball player’s income was met with a lengthy response about racial violence and disputed claims in South Africa.

These bizarre, unsolicited replies came from Grok’s official X account, which uses AI-generated responses when users tag @grok. The glitch prompted an outpouring of user screenshots and criticism, highlighting the unpredictable nature of AI-powered tools, especially when navigating politically and racially sensitive terrain.

The cause of the anomaly remains unclear, and xAI has not issued an official statement. However, the chatbot appears to have returned to normal behavior. The incident follows previous controversies around Grok, including a February episode where it briefly censored negative commentary about Musk and Donald Trump before xAI reversed course after backlash.

This episode isn’t unique to xAI. OpenAI and Google — both leading AI developers — are also contending with safety concerns. OpenAI recently rolled back an update to its flagship ChatGPT after it began excessively validating users, regardless of whether the input was dangerous or unethical.
